Luxembourg's Ministry of Justice and the Prison Administration have reported that Justice Minister Elisabeth Margue visited the Centre Pénitentiaire de Givenich (CPG) on Friday 8 November 2024.
In the presence of Serge Legil, Director of the Prison Administration, and Claude Lentz, Director of CPG, a delegation from the Ministry of Justice was able to discover this semi-open establishment, located in the east of the country.
The guided tour, preceded by a presentation of the penitentiary centre and the specificities related to semi-open detention, allowed the visitors to discover the workshops, the Maison Casel (now a halfway house for prisoners under semi-liberty) and the Pavilions. These five Pavilions constitute living units each comprising six rooms and common areas where prisoners can meet to cook and stay. The delegation also visited the central guard post as well as the detention sections including individual cells and sports facilities. In addition, the education and training service, as well as the psycho-social and socio-educational service, were presented.
Within the CPG, detainees can movely freely around the prison site during the day and can work inside or outside the establishment. A distinctive element of this penitentiary centre is the mixed detention, which involves the reception of female and male prisoners. The CPG currently houses 67 prisoners, with a total capacity of 113 beds.
This visit concludes the three visits made by the Minister of Justice to the Grand Duchy's penitentiary centres.
