The Grand Ducal Police reported several cases of drink driving in Luxembourg over the weekend.
At around 19:00 on Saturday 9 November 2024, the police were informed of a car in Ospern that was driving "very slowly" and in a zigzag pattern. The officers found and stopped the car. The driver was subjected to an alcohol test, which came back positive. The police physically confiscated the driving license and issued a provisional driving ban.
Around 21:30, the police received reports of a car between Junglinster and Echternach that was also driving "very slowly", in a zigzag pattern, among other things. The car knocked over several traffic cones and collided with a street lamp. The vehicle was found near Lauterborn. The police pulled over the driver and carried out a breathalyser test, which was positive. The driver was then taken to the police station and subjected to another alcohol test, the result of which "clearly exceeded" the legal limits. A check of the driver's personal details showed that the driver already had a driving ban.
At around 22:00, a caller reported that a car was parked in the "Rosswenkel" roundabout in Contern and had been involved in an accident. When the officers arrived, they found the sole driver sitting in the passenger seat for a nap. The subsequent alcohol test was positive and the driver was handed a provisional driving ban.
Later, at around 02:00 on the morning of Sunday 10 November 2024, a car was reported to be driving in a zigzag pattern in Foetz. The reported vehicle was found in a public car park, where the driver's alcohol test came back positive. During the identity check, the police found that the driver already had a driving ban.
At around 03:00, a car was found in Bascharage that was driving with its hazard lights on. The officers' instructions to stop were ignored and the driver continued driving. The car was stopped in the Biff roundabout. When the officers spoke to the driver, they noted a "very strong" smell of alcohol. The driver was slurring his speech and even fell asleep several times during the conversation with the officers. The driver refused to take the breathalyser test, which is why his driving licence was subsequently revoked and a provisional driving ban was issued.
At around 06:00 on Sunday, a driver was stopped in Luxembourg-Hollerich for driving in a zigzag pattern and in a damaged vehicle. The driver's breathalyser test came back positive. His licence was revoked and a provisional driving ban was issued.
The police noted that reports were made in all the aforementioned cases.
Moreover, the police noted that they carried out alcohol tests, at the request of the state prosecutor, between Hesperange and Itzig on the CR159 (at the cemetery) on Saturday 9 November from 23:00 to midnight and in Luxembourg City on Sunday 10 November from 01:00 to 02:00 (60 Boulevard Général S. Patton) and from 03:00 to 03:45 (3 Rue Auguste Laval).
A total of 163 motorists were subjected to a standard breath test, even in the absence of any "serious" evidence. In seventeen cases, the test was positive and fourteen statements were drawn up. Three driving licences were withdrawn on the spot.
Similar checks took place in Mertzig and Vianden on Saturday from 17:30 to 20:45. 433 motorists were subjected to a standard breath test. In seven cases, the test was positive and two statements were drawn up. One driving licence was withdrawn on-site.
