The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in August and September 2024.
International protection
A total of 153 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in August 2024 (compared to 150 in July 2024 and 241 in August 2023). 177 people applied for this status in September 2024 (243 in September 2023). To date this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 1,307 applications for international protection - down from 1,740 received during the same period in 2023.
155 decisions on asylum applications were taken in August, with 75 applicants being granted refugee status (79 in July). In September, 181 decisions were taken, with 74 applicants receiving refugee status.
So far in 2024, most applications have come from Eritrean nationals (298), followed by Syrian (175), Colombian (69), Turkish (65) and Venezulean (58) nationals.
Temporary protection
A total of 119 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in August 2024 (up from 59 in July). In September, 73 people applied for this status. So far this year, Luxembourg has received a total of 686 such applications.
A total of 115 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in August, with 110 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (57 in July); five were rejected. In September, 69 decisions were taken, with 57 applicants receiving the status and twelve applications being rejected.
Most applicants in August (114) and September (68) were Ukrainian nationals. Ukrainians have also represented the largest group (621) among applicants for temporary protection so far this year. There have also been applications from thirteen Algerian, eight Moroccan, six Turkish and five Indian nationals, as well as 33 nationals of other unspecified countries during this period.
