Shortly after 17:15 today, Saturday 24 August 2024, MeteoLux, together with the High Commission for National Protection (HCNP), the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps (CGDIS) and the Water Management Agency (AGE) issued a weather warning concerning thunderstorms with strong winds expected in the evening.
This orange-level warning had upgraded the yellow-level warning issued by MeteoLux earlier in the day at 14:00, and complemented the messages that had been sent out earlier in the afternoon, at around 16:45, by SMS using the national emergency warning system.
The Severe Weather Risk Assessment Unit (CERI) met in the afternoon to assess the weather situation and subsequently issued a warning of thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds, which could affect the whole country.
Between 18:00 and 22:00, thunderstorms may occur throughout the Grand Duchy, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 90 to 100 km/h, or even more locally. This area of thunderstorms will pass through in a relatively short space of time. Once the storms have passed through, the situation is expected to calm down fairly quickly.
The authorities have warned the public to be vigilant, especially when taking part in seasonal outdoor activities (camping, events, etc.), not to take shelter under trees, especially not under isolated trees, and to avoid walking in the woods. It is also advisable to shelter objects that are sensitive to the wind (garden furniture, parasols, etc.).
