The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy in May 2024.
International protection
A total of 141 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in May 2024, up from 119 in April 2024. In the first five months of 2024, Luxembourg received a total of 715 applications for international protection - down from 867 received during the same period in 2023.
126 decisions on asylum applications were taken in May 2024, with 53 applicants being granted refugee status (71 in April).
Eritreans (36) once again represented the largest group among applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in May 2024, followed by Syrian nationals (22). In the first five months of 2024 combined, most applications came from Eritreans (166), followed by Syrians (95) and Colombians (42).
Temporary protection
A total of 77 people applied for temporary protection in Luxembourg in May 2024 - up from 54 in April 2024. In the first five months of 2024, Luxembourg received a total of 352 such applications.
Of the applicants for May 2024, 70 were Ukrainian nationals and seven were from other unspecified countries.
A total of 69 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in May, with 59 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (37 in April); ten were rejected.
Whilst Ukrainians represented the largest group (304) among applicants for temporary protection in the first five months of 2024, there were also applications from twelve Algerian nationals, six Turkish nationals and five Moroccan nationals, as well as 25 nationals of other unspecified countries during this period.
