The Kanner Youth Telephone (KJT) telephone helpline service for children and young people has launched a drive to recruit new volunteers to help run its invaluable service.

I’m not listening to you anymore, everything is still a mystery”: according to this principle, the KJT has been offering telephone advice for children and young people for more than 30 years. The online consultation service has also been available since 2003; In 2021, chat communication (peer-to-peer) was launched.

Children and young people need someone to talk to and listen to; Often the fears are great and the paths are long. The 116111 is immediately accessible to children and young people and at the same time offers protection. Children and young people call 116111 when they are in acute emergencies, when they are simply looking for someone to talk to or when they need specific information. They decide when, from where and on what topic they call. They can talk openly and anonymously about their problems; they decide for themselves whether and what consequences the conversation has. They are supported in expressing and organising their thoughts and feelings and finding their own solution steps. If necessary, they can receive information about further help.

The main issues faced by young people are psychosocial issues, such as anxiety, depressive moods, conflicts within their family or among friends. But children also call because of loneliness or because of experiences of violence in the family or school.

The advisory work is carried out by well-trained volunteers who contribute their time and skills to provide advice and support to children and young people. The KJT is now looking for additional volunteers to strengthen its team: they are looking for people who enjoy contact with children and young people and are interested in psychological and educational topics. Future staff must be mentally resilient, flexible in their thinking and open-minded in their contacts.

Those who are interested in personal development, are interested in learning new things and speak Luxembourgish, you have come to the right place.

Those interested are prepared for active participation in a 70-hour theoretical basic training (evening appointments on Mondays from 18:00-21:00 and on three weekends) and a six-month internship phase, where they usually do three hours of telephone service twice a month, as well as monthly supervision meetings and participate in other training seminars.

Interested parties can contact KJT by email: contact@kjt.lu.

An information evening is being organised on Monday 22 April 2024 at 18:30. Further information is available online at www.kjt.lu
