On Monday 5 February 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Home Affairs recalled that temporary protection certificates for Ukrainian refugees are coming up for renewal.
The ministry noted that since March 2022, following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, EU member states (including Luxembourg) have applied the temporary protection mechanism for people fleeing Ukraine. This mechanism, initially applicable for a twelve-month period then extended until 4 March 2024, has once again been extended by one year, until 4 March 2025.
In view of this extension, the certificates issued to beneficiaries of temporary protection to attest to their status, initially valid until 3 March 2024, should now be renewed.
The ministry added that all beneficiaries of temporary protection had been contacted in recent weeks, by registered mail, to inform them of the procedure to be followed.
The General Directorate of Immigration of the Ministry of Home Affairs is calling on anyone who has not yet taken the necessary steps to renew their certificate to follow the instructions indicated in this letter.
Beneficiaries of temporary protection, residing in Luxembourg, whose temporary protection certificate expires on 3 March 2024 and who have not received such a letter are asked to contact the General Directorate of Immigration, via email: immigration.desk@mai.etat.lu.
The ministry stressed the need to extend such certificates before 4 March 2024 to ensure that the individuals concerned can continue to benefit from the rights linked to temporary protection, such as the right to remain in the Grand Duchy, the right to work and the right to material assistance provided by the Luxembourg State.
