Having snowed heavily overnight, Luxembourg woke up to a white blanket of snow this morning, Thursday 18 January 2023.

With MeteoLux forecasting a snowfall of around 5cm, conditions underfoot this morning continue to be treacherous as the snowfall came after a day of freezing rain / black ice.

While schools may be reopened today, many school buses are unable to navigate the snowy conditions. Road surfaces remain slippery for all motorists and motorway speed limits of 50 km/h have been introduced. Some services, including certain courier services, have been suspended for the second day in a row.

While the authorities struggle to cope with the weather conditions, roads and footpaths are being cleared, with more resources available and deployed in urban areas, meaning rural areas may not have roads cleared for a while yet.

The snowfall has been heaviest in the north of the Grand Duchy, generally lying on higher ground and being closest geographically to the Ardennes.

It is expected to stop snowing mid-morning, with precipitation turning to sleet and then rain, as temperatures rise to just above freezing, possibly up to +2C. Overcast conditions are forecast to give way to clearer skies.

Over the next few days, temperatures are forecast to plunge to -10C on Saturday night, but with no precipitation over the weekend. Next week, daytime temperatures are forecast to rise to as much as +12C on Tuesday and Wednesday during the day.
