The Luxembourg Institute of Standardisation, Accreditation, Safety and Quality of Products and Services, ILNAS, has expanded its areas of expertise.

ILNAS is a public administration which started its activities in 2008 and which is placed under the authority of Luxembourg's Minister of the Economy. ILNAS is active in controls and risk prevention in many areas of activity for non-food products, such as toys, electrical products, personal protective equipment and automobiles.

The Economy Ministry and ILNAS stated in a press release that a new framework law published on 23 December 2022 supports ILNAS in the execution of its missions and has assigned it new areas of competence. ILNAS is now also in charge of monitoring the market for thermal and electrical machinery (lawn mowers, agricultural machinery, etc.) as well as aircraft systems (i.e. drones).

In addition, the new law has strengthened the investigation and sanction capabilities of ILNAS, especially within the framework of legal metrology, carrying out checks on measuring instruments regulated on the national territory, and digital trust, particularly for the supervision of trust service providers, electronic archiving and checking the proper application of cybersecurity rules. If the rules are not followed, the offender faces increased administrative and criminal penalties.

The ministry and ILNAS assured that the latter remains invested in standardisation, particularly in the development of national, European and/or international standards. ILNAS is also in charge of monitoring laboratories and certification and inspection bodies.
