On Thursday 29 June 2023, Luxembourg's Customs and Excise Agency reported that customs officials, with the help of a service dog, confiscated about 3.5 kg of hashish near the France-Luxembourg border.
As part of checks near the border, customs officials caught a drug courier attempting to smuggle around 3.5 kg of hashish into Luxembourg by car.
When the officials wanted to inspect the vehicle coming from France, the driver defied the customs officers' instructions and fled the scene. The customs officials then took off after the driver.
Reportedly disregarding the Highway Code, the driver in question caused an accident after the car sped through a red traffic light. The suspect's car was damaged but no one was injured.
During the subsequent search of the vehicle, a service dog named Balto sniffed out the hashish, which was hidden in what customs officials described as a professionally installed smuggling hiding place in the front and underbody of the vehicle.
By order of the Luxembourg public prosecutor's office, the customs officials confiscated the drugs and the vehicle used to transport them. The 19-year-old driver, who did not have a valid driving licence, was arrested and brought before the magistrate.
