
The Directorate of Immigration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has published figures regarding applications for international protection (asylum) and temporary protection in the Grand Duchy for the month of March 2023.
International protection
A total of 161 people applied for international protection in Luxembourg in March 2023, down from 174 in March 2022 and up from 135 in February 2023.
130 decisions on asylum applications were taken in March 2023, down from 141 the previous month, with 41 applicants (up from 36 in February) being granted refugee status in Luxembourg.
The largest number of applicants seeking asylum in Luxembourg in March 2023 came from Syria (55), followed by Eritrea (28) and Morocco (eleven).
By the end of March, Luxembourg had received a total of 476 applications for international protection so far in 2023- slightly higher than the 455 applications received this time last year.
Temporary protection
A total of 182 people contacted the Immigration Directorate to express their interest in applying for temporary protection in Luxembourg in March 2023, whilst 160 people actually applied for the status (up from 88 requests in February and 101 in January).
Five people decided (for various reasons) not to apply for temporary protection in the end despite previously having indicated their interest in doing so.
March 2023 marked one year since the temporary protection mechanism was activated at the European level in light of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This may explain then why the majority of applicants for temporary protection last month came from Ukraine (153).
Overall, in the first three months of 2023, Ukrainian nationals represented 93.7% of applicants (327 people) for temporary protection in Luxembourg.
A total of 163 decisions on temporary protection applications were taken in March 2023 (down from 510 in February and 3,293 in January), with 141 applicants being granted this status in Luxembourg (up from 77 in February and 89 in January).
In the first three months of 2023, Luxembourg received a total of 349 requests for temporary protection.
