On Saturday 7 November 2026, the Grand Ducal Police reported that a suspect has been arrested following a fire in a building on Avenue de la Gare in Luxembourg-Gare on the evening of Friday 6 November.

According to the police, at around 22:30 on Friday, they were notified of a fire in a building on Avenue de la Gare, near the capital’s central railway station.

Several witnesses had reported seeing large amounts of smoke. Emergency services attending the scene found that polystyrene mats were burning inside the building, causing significant smoke. Initial findings indicate that the damage to the building itself was minor.

Witnesses also reported seeing a man jump from a first-floor window before fleeing the scene. During a subsequent search operation, police located the suspect a short time later on Rue de Strasbourg. During questioning, the man admitted to deliberately starting the fire.

After police procedures had been completed, the man was initially allowed to leave the police station. Shortly afterwards, however, a police officer heard a loud bang and became aware of an incident at the junction of Rue Marie et Pierre Curie and Rue Auguste Lumière in Luxembourg-Bonnevoie. At the scene, the officer discovered that the same man had damaged a parked vehicle using a manhole cover.

The suspect was subsequently restrained by officers once again, and the necessary reports were drawn up.

As the man's behaviour suggested that he could pose a potential danger to himself and others, he was taken to hospital for a medical assessment, where he was admitted for inpatient treatment.
