On Wednesday 5 October 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of State, the Ministry of Energy and Spatial Planning, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Housing reported on meeting with leaders of SYVICOL, the organisation representing all municipalities across the Grand Duchy.

The Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, together with Taina Bofferding, Minister of the Interior, Claude Turmes, Minister of Energy, Henri Kox, Minister of Housing, and Yuriko Backes, Minister of Finance, met the SYVICOL representatives as part of the regular exchanges of views between the government and municipalities.

The repercussions of a possible energy shortage on municipalities, following the war in Ukraine, the reform of the property tax and neutral cemeteries were the main topics addressed at this meeting.

The government recalled the importance of municipalities as players in the implementation of energy saving measures and reviewed, together with SYVICOL, additional measures to be taken in this area.

In addition, the government informed SYVICOL of the finalising of work on the reform of property tax, taxes on the mobilisation of land and on the non-occupation of housing as well as the future national register of buildings and accommodations.

The two parties also addressed taking into account sociological and demographic realities in Luxembourg to offer all residents, in compliance with the principles of neutrality of municipal cemeteries and the principle of equal treatment, burial according to their own rituals and customs.
