On Wednesday 9 February 2022, Luxembourg's Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development confirmed a case of avian flu (H5N1 type virus) in a wild goose found dead in Alscheid, near Wiltz.

In order to avoid the introduction of the avian virus into poultry flocks, the Administration of Veterinary Services of the Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development informed that the following preventive measures put in place at the end of 2021, will remain in force until further notice, throughout the territory of Luxembourg:

  • Feeding and watering must take place in premises that are not accessible to wild birds;
  • Poultry must be kept in closed rooms;
  • Poultry may have access to exit areas provided that these are protected by nets avoiding any contact with wild birds;
  • Biosecurity rules must be scrupulously respected;
  • Any display of poultry is prohibited;
  • Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian.

In the event of the discovery of a dead or sick aquatic wild bird (goose, duck or swan), it is not recommended to touch the animal but instead be reported immediately to the Administration of Veterinary Services via e-mail to info@asv.etat.lu or by phone at (+352) 247-82539.

Consumption of eggs and poultry meat poses no risk to public health.
