The Veterinary Services Administration of Luxembourg's Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Rural Development has confirmed the detection of the equine herpes virus EHV-1 in the Grand Duchy.

In recent days, many cases of EHV-1 have been identified in Europe, leading to the cancellation of serveral competitions. Although there is no obligation to report, the Veterinary Services Administration has received reports of the detection of a case of infection with this virus in Luxembourg.

The Administration recalled that this virus is not transmissible from horses to humans. Equine viral rhinopneumonitis disease exists in several forms, with the nervous form being the most dangerous. The disease is caused by a herpes virus which is transmitted directly or indirectly through contact between horses. This virus is highly contagious and can remain in a latent state in the body, thus representing a significant health risk. Vaccination helps prevent severe forms of this disease.

In case of suspicion of the disease or confirmation of the latter, it is the responsibility of the animal owner to take measures in consultation with his / her veterinarian to prevent the spread of the virus to other horses.
