The City of Luxembourg has announced the hiring of private security guards to strengthen security measures around the Luxembourg-Gare and Ville Haute districts.

To enhance the feeling of security and reinforce public order, the City of Luxembourg has decided to implement several preventive measures. As such, the municipal authorities have entrusted a private security and surveillance company approved in Luxembourg with a "preventive presence mission" in these particular districts, from 1 December 2020 to 31 January 2021.

The company will work in cooperation with the Grand Ducal Police, without encroaching on the latter's field of competence, nor replacing the mission of the public forces.

In the Luxembourg-Gare district there will be two teams made up of two officers with a guard dog, while in the Ville Haute district there will be one team of two officers and a guard dog.

In addition to social action, and in collaboration with Inter-Actions, the City of Luxembourg has set up a prevention and mediation service, entitled "A vos côtés" ("At your side"), which will begin on 15 December 2020. This service, made up of six members, aims to ensure a visible presence in the Gare district through the active accompaniment of residents, as well as playing the role of mediator, while making the link with the Grand Ducal Police and the Streetwork services, which have been active for several years on the territory of the capital.

Some opposition parties on the municipal council have criticised the hiring of private security guards. Both the Left and the Pirate Party issued press releases in which they described the move as unacceptable.
