The latest event to be cancelled in Luxembourg due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic is the traditional Schueberfouer, an annual funfair held on the Glacis square in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg and one of the country's largest and most popular events.
Alderman of the City of Luxembourg, Patrick Goldschmidt, took to social media yesterday to announce that the 680th edition of the Schueberfouer would no longer be taking place this year (at least not in its traditional format) due to the ongoing COVID-19 health crisis. This news follows the government announcement that all large gatherings were suspended until 31 July 2020.
While this year's Schueberfouer was set to take place from Friday 21 August to Thursday 10 September, and thus after the aforementioned date, the organisers have nonetheless taken the decision to cancel it. Alderman Patrick Goldschmidt explained that the decision was based on the current situation in relation to COVID-19 and that the organisers were discussing possibilities of presenting the Schueberfouer through different means.
Historically, John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg, founded the Schueberfouer as we know it in 1340. In the past century, the event has only been cancelled due to world wars.
