On Sunday evening, a child died following an accident at the Christmas Market on Place Guillaume II in Luxembourg-ville.

The accident happened at around 20:00 when an ice sculpture next to one of the wooden chalets beside the ice skating rink collapsed. It is understood that the child was hit by one of the flying shards of ice from the ice sculpture that had been created earlier that afternoon.

The emergency services were called and arrived at the scene of the accident; however, the child died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. The Hotel de Ville was used to house and comfort relatives and friends of the family where psychological support was provided.

The police closed the Christmas Market and ice skating rink, opened this weekend as part of the Winterlights festival, on Place Guillaume II from around 21:30. An investigation has been initiated to establish the exact circumstances leading up to the incident.

The police have appealed for witnesses to the incident and have asked them to contact tel.: 2440-4500 or tel.: 113.
