With fewer daylight hours, the winter months tend to see an increasing number of break-ins; this has been the case in recent days with the Luxembourg Police having reported that a number of burglaries took place across the Grand Duchy on Tuesday.
On Tuesday morning between 10:30 and 11:45, a break-in reportedly occurred at a house on Route d'Esch in Belvaux. The resident arrived home to find that the garage door was open and valuables were missing.
A similar incident occurred at around 11:00 on Rue Louis XIV in Luxembourg-Merl, when a resident who was laying in bed spotted a man with a torch. The suspected thief fled the scene. On site, it appeared that the front door had been forced open. The local police later discovered that there had been a break-in at another apartment at the same address, where the rooms had been searched for valuables. The police are currently investigating the incident.
In addition, at around noon yesterday in Luxembourg-Eich, a resident caught two burglars trying to escape from the balcony. It was later discovered that the thieves had gained access to the household via a window on the ground floor. The resident described the suspects as two men, both approximately 30 years old with fair skin and wearing black clothes. One of the men was reportedly about 1.55 m tall and thin, whilst the other man was about 1.70 m tall with broad shoulders.
The police also reported that a previous burglary occurred over the weekend on Rue de Luxembourg in Heisdorf.
The police have recalled that anyone discovering a burglary should pay attention to their safety. Those affected should consciously and loudly draw attention to themselves to scare off the intruder(s) and, if possible, turn on a light to identify and frighten the perpetrator and subsequently describe them as accurately as possible. Moreover, those affected should contact the emergency services (police) immediately at 113. If a call is not possible, the "Silent Call" function can be used via the police app. This makes it possible to transmit a short message to the emergency call centre in an emergency situation.
Officials have assured that the fight against burglary crime remains one of their priorities this autumn and winter.
