In mid-December, the Grand Ducal Police confiscated a total of 252 reptiles from an address in Esch-sur-Alzette, as confirmed by the Luxembourg courts.
The incident that took place on 13 December was only confirmed this week, and followed a court order on the basis of the protection of animals. As a result, the police raised a pet shop and a restaurant, in the presence of representatives of the state veterinary services and representatives from the Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg.
A total of 252 snakes, scorpions and centipedes, including 123 poisonous animals, were confiscated. The poisonous animals were transferred to a special unit (Auffangstation) in Munich. All the other animals were relocated to the Parc Le'h wildlife park in Dudelange.
As all owners and animal traders are obliged to check whether they require special permission/licences, according to the law of 27 June 2018 on the protection of animals, the law of 18 July 2018 concerning the protection of nature and natural resources, and the amended law of 10 June 1999 relating to classified establishments, the public prosecutor ordered the police to question the trader and open an investigation.
