On Monday 26 November 2018, the Grand Ducal Police confirmed that their investigative unit has started an investigation into a series of suspicious letters containing an unknown substance being sent to an address in Bascharage.

These letters were sent in September and October this year and required the extensive use of a number of public authorities, including the police and the emergency services. The postal distribution centre was also affected by these incidents. According to the investigation, the letters were sent from Germany and Belgium.

After completing a series of analyses of the unknown substance, and eliminating human and environmental hazards, the police were able to initiate a trail-related analysis of the envelopes and stationery.

The public prosecutor's office will oversee the evaluation of DNA traces taken from the letters in the coming days.

The statement from the police included a reminder that "false alarms or threatening of assassinations constitute criminal offenses". In this context, imprisonment of up to 5 years as well as fines are envisaged.

The police have asked that anyone who can provide relevant information on the situation described are requested to contact the Police Judiciaire, homicide section, by tel: 4997-6151.
