Following last Friday's announcement by the Water Administration concerning the presence of blue-green algae in the surface water of the lake at Haute-Sûre, the presence of such algae has now been reported in other swimming waters in the Grand Duchy.

Taking into account the exceptionally early occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms in the Haute-Sûre lake, monitoring of Weiswampach Lake and Remerschen ponds has been intensified.

Lake Weiswampach

The Water Management Administration has detected a proliferation of cyanobacteria in Lake Weiswampach today, Monday. The presence of cyanobacteria, including Microcystis sp., a potentially toxin-producing species, has been confirmed by the LIST Research Centre. Therefore a ban on bathing and all nautical activity has been imposed with immediate effect for the lake at Weiswampach.

Remerschen ponds

As far as Remerschen ponds are concerned, no cyanobacterial proliferation has been observed and swimming is still allowed at this stage.

The ban on bathing and all nautical activity that was pronounced last week is being maintained for the whole of the Haute-Sûre lake.

The current situation regarding bathing/swimming waters in Luxembourg, i.e. Lake Haute-Sûre, Lake Weiswampach and Remerschen ponds, can be followed on the website of the Administration of Water Management at www.waasser.lu as well as on the geoportal's general public map (http://go.lu/3/VHB1).
