On Sunday 29 July 2018, a 53 year-old man died in a swimming accident at Remerschen ponds, located between Remich and Schengen.

At around 17:15, the Grand Ducal Police were informed about a swimming accident on the east side of the swimming pond at Remerschen. Rescue units, including around 20 scuba divers, were flown in by police helicopter to help search for the swimmer, a 53 year-old man of Bulgarian nationality and resident of Germany, who had gone swimming with a group of friends; at one stage he submerged and did not resurface, so they raised the alarm.

Shortly after 21:00, the divers located the man in the water; however, attempts to resussitate him failed.

In order to determine the exact cause of death, the public prosecutor has ordered an autopsy.
