On Wednesday 25 July 2018, the Cabinet of the Luxembourg Government addressed the issue of long-term planning for the exhibition space in Luxembourg-Kirchberg which is currently under lease to LuxExpo the Box until 2027.
Today's discussion raised the issue of the strategic direction and business model of a future convention centre and exhibition park.
As part of the end of the LuxExpo The Box lease in 2027 and in a desire to reallocate the current LuxExpo site in Kirchberg, Luxembourg's Ministry of the Economy has analysed the possibilities for the future establishment of a new congress and exhibition facility. In this context, the Ministry has established the future strategic orientation of the Luxembourg as a destination in the world of congresses and exhibitions and elaborated the business model of a future congress and exhibition park in close collaboration with LuxExpo The Box and its shareholders as well as the relevant ministries.
The meeting outlined this strategic orientation which aims to strengthen the image and visibility of the Grand Duchy at international level through flagship events, contribute to the consolidation and development of priority economic sectors and generate a maximum of direct and indirect benefits for the national economy.
To achieve this, the study concluded that the construction of a new state-of-the-art building, comprising 25,000 m2 of multifunctional and modular conference and exhibition space, is essential. The site for the construction of this building will be characterised in particular by the proximity of the city centre and the airport and by excellent accessibility as much by road as by public transport.
The meeting mandated the Ministry of Economy to create working groups bringing together the representatives of the various stakeholders and to prepare the next steps and decision-making on this issue: the investment concept and the financial arrangements, the organisational and legal model of the future operator, the operational scale and the infrastructure.
