The recent cold spell experienced earlier this week in Luxembourg may endanger the most vulnerable, according to the Ministry of Health.

In light of current cold weather conditions, the Luxembourg Ministry of Health has highlighted some precautions. In general, the human organism has the physiological mechanisms necessary to control exposure to extreme cold, under the condition of adequate thermal insulation. Nevertheless, temperatures below -10 degrees may create health problems if certain precautions are not taken.

Low temperatures cause an overload of blood circulation leading to increased work of the heart. This can be especially difficult for people with heart problems. Moreover, the cold weather can lead to an increased risk of thrombosis, especially in people who already have circulatory issues. It is therefore recommended to protect the skin against low temperatures by wearing suitable clothing.

Further problems, such as dehydration can be solved by keeping well hydrated and drinking a lot of liquids. In the case of more severe frostbite, characterised by the appearance of blisters, a doctor should be consulted. Moreover, care should be taken to keep heat inside houses while ensuring adequate ventilation to replace the air inside. It is therefore advisable to open the windows widely once or several times a day, as needed and for a few minutes only.

Additionally, the Ministry of Health issued warning regarding defective heating installations: more intensive use of these installations, such as old stoves for example, as well as the clogging of doors and windows may increase the carbon monoxide gas content inside homes, which can lead to intoxication. If headaches and dizziness occur in the presence of such equipment, leave the premises immediately, contact 112 if necessary and have the heating system checked by a specialist.

Finally, care should be taken to avoid slipping on ice patches, watch for chunks of ice falling from roofs, and areas of frozen water.
