Following a period of continuous rain throughout Thursday, and which is expected to continue into Thursday night, MeteoLux issued a flood warning for the Moselle valley just after 19:30 on Thursday evening.

Following the heavy rain during the first week of January, the Moselle broke its banks over the first week-end of the new year, with water levels recorded at 80cm above the high water mark between Grevenmacher and Remich, leading to significant flooding in many places. Many premises - both commercial and private - suffered flooded cellars, and some vehicles left unattended were also affected. Many riverside paths, benches and tables were either wholly or partly underwater, while some streets in Remich were blocked off to road traffic due to the flooding.

With more rain falling upstream of the Luxembourg stretch of the River Moselle over the past 48 hours, levels have risen dangerously high, with the real possibility of flooding this evening, tonight and tomorrow (Friday).

A cold front from a depression centred on Scandinavia is slowly passing through the region and is determining our weather here.
