On 1 January 2018, the law reforming rent subsidies came into effect in Luxembourg.

The application of this new law on the revision of rent subsidies means that the number of households that can potentially benefit from this subsidy has been substantially increased since the individual housing aid is now available to more households.

Individual assistance in the form of a "rent subsidy" was introduced in January 2016. Since that date, each beneficiary household has benefited on average from a subsidy of €126 per month.

In order to increase the number of potential beneficiaries, the eligibility criteria for the aid have been revised as follows: a reduction of the minimum effort rate required to 25% of household income; the non-inclusion of social transfers in the calculation of the applicant household income: the reduction of the requirement to have a regular income to three months; the modification of the income threshold selected for the eligibility of the aid to €2,500 for a single person- for other household types, the upper income limit is obtained by multiplying this amount by the number of household consumption units.

The revision acts simultaneously on the four parameters and makes it possible to increase the target population, which affects all types of households.
