Field measurements and water analyses carried out at Upper-Sûre lake, at Rommwiss, Liefrange, Burfelt, Fuussefeld, Insenborn and Lultzhausen, have revealed the presence of toxic cyanobacteria in high densities and the presence of toxins that can cause health problems in humans and animals.
As a result, a ban on all nautical activities has therefore been announced with immediate effect for the entire lake.
As part of the regular monitoring of the quality of bathing waters, a proliferation of cyanobacteria, known as "blue-green algae" in everyday parlance, had previously been observed in
mid-August at the "Rommwiss" beach at the Lac de la Haute-Sûre. Surveillance of the Upper Sûre Lake has been continued and the latest analyses have shown that the proliferation of cyanobacteria has spread there.
The recommendations formulated by the Water Management Administration in consultation with the Health Directorate for the "Rommwiss" beach dated 18 August 2017 must now be applied for
the entire Haute-Sure lake. The public is thus called upon to:
• avoid direct contact with the water in the Haute-Sûre lake (e.g. diving, water sports, fishing);
• do not let dogs and other pets drink water from the lake;
• Do not consume any fish caught there.
If you have any health problems after swimming, please contact your physician mentioning any contact with the toxic cyanobacteria.
According to the communiqué of 18 August 2017, the authorities reaffirm that there is no risk for drinking water from the Upper Sûre lake since water is taken from a depth of 25m
where the concentration of cyanobacteria is very low and that the water treatments allow an efficient removal of the toxins of the cyanobacteria possibly contained in the water.
