A movement to encourage local food products in state-subsidised institutions will be debated in parliament after surpassing the requisite 4,500 signatures on the Chamber of Deputies' website.

Several presidents of agricultural associations in the Grand Duchy had joined forces to start the petition back in May, with the public invited to sign their support to the cause from 6 June 2016. The movement showed promising beginnings, amassing over 100 signatures in its first day. Now, two weeks before it is due to close, Petition N°668 has received over 4,600 signatures and does not show signs of stopping.

The motivation behind the petition was to see Luxembourg nurseries, schools, hospitals and care homes stocked with local and regional products, where possible, to provide environmentally-friendly catering that would simultaneously support local farmers and enhance the national economy and would provide the consumer with the guarantee of quality and traceability.
