In the early hours on Saturday morning, the emergency services were alerted to a fire at a two-storey residential building on rue de la Libération in Pétange.

At around 02:30, when the firefighters arrived on the scene from Pétange, Bascharage, Differdange and Clemency, they discovered that over a dozen people were still inside the building; they managed to evacuate a total of 13 people from the building.

The fire had started in the basement of the building and resulted in a lot of smoke throughout the building; it was extinguished quickly. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

Due to the smoke in the building, the residents cannot remain it it for the time being. The Mayor of Pétange has organised an emergency shelter in a nearby hotel for families. All 13 residents, including 6 children aged between 2 and 16 years of age were, as a precaution, brought by ambulances to hospital for monitoring.

The police had cordoned off the surrounding streets which were the re-opened to traffic after the building had been deemed safe.
