On Saturday 18 June 2016, Minister of the Interior, Dan Kersch, attended the final exercise of the Humanitarian Intervention Team (HIT) of the Administration des Services de Secours.
The exercise took place from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 June 2016 at Lagland military camp near Arlon in Belgium with the support, among others, of the Technisches Hilfswerk Deutschland (THD) and the Grand Ducal Police.
The initial training, which began in late 2015 for 28 new recruits, was concluded with a performance of a real life simulation at Lagland camp. For three days, the trainees learned how to behave in exceptional circumstances in a crisis zone or area of instability or ethnic conflict.
The training, assessed by observers, forms a fundamental aspect of the preparation of civil protection teams working abroad in disaster areas, to ensure the efficiency of operations, their responsiveness and their good coordination in disaster situations.
In discussions with stakeholders, Minister Kersch underlined the importance of good training. He commended the intervention group, formed of woman and men eager to contribute to the challenges arising in crisis areas, thanking them for their "extremely hard work and exemplary commitment."
The Humanitarian Intervention Team Luxembourg is responsible for humanitarian missions outside of the Grand Duchy in cases of severe natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, etc.) on the order of the government, either upon request from the country/ies concerned or as part of international assistance.
