Following the "Let the sunshine in" (2014) and "Look up! "(2015) initiatives on the Rue Philippe II and Avenue de la Porte Neuve in the pedestian zone of Luxembourg city centre, the 2016 initiative is entitled "Swings".
On Thursday 16 June 2016, the Mayor and Aldermen of the Ville de Luxembourg, the Casino Luxembourg contemporary art forum and the "Association rue Philippe II" inaugurated the new outdoor art initiative to beautify the streets until the end of August 2016.
"Swings" is an installation of 450 swings hanging above the street and moving in the wind, evoking the summer. This work is by the Luxembourg artist Max Mertens and was selected by a jury after the competition launched in January by the "Association rue Philippe II", in collaboration with the Casino Luxembourg - Forum of Contemporary Art and the Ville de Luxembourg.
The "Swings" initiative was born from an initiative of street traders on the two streets who grouped together and joined forces and means to enhance the pedestrian shopping area and create a common passage and friendly summer atmosphere.
