On Thursday 19 May 2016, the Luxembourg Police and Customs and Excise carried out a joint large-scale operation around the country, involving a total of 50 police officers and 12 officials from Customs.
The inspection was carried out as part of the TRIVIUM 6 European operation conducted simultaneously in the UK, the Netherlands, Romania, Lithuania and the Grand Duchy under the auspices of Europol. The initiative formed part of the fight against cross-border crime, particularly the transfer of illicit goods within Europe.
In Luxembourg, vans, minibuses and small lorries leaving the country were primarily targeted, with the focus for passenger vehicles predominantly on identity and security checks. The operation was conducted at several points, including the Hellange roundabout on the A13 and the Wasserbillig-Mesenich border post on the A1. Various mobile controls were also used, as well as mobile scanners for lorries and two dogs from the canine unit.
Overall, 141 vehicles and 179 people were checked in the Grand Duchy. Three toll warnings regarding traffic regulations were issued and two licenses were confiscated due to alcohol consumption. One driver was found to be neither in possession of a valid driving license, nor adequate insurance for the vehicle. Similarly, two vehicles were immobilised due to a lack of valid insurance, one of which was confiscated. One motorist was found under the influence of drugs, resulting in 5 grams of marijuana being seized.
