After steadily falling throughout the first three months of 2016, asylum figures saw an incline in April 2016 to a total of 126 applications.
Year over year, the 126 asylum applications in April 2016 are almost equal to those in the same period of 2014 (49) and 2015 (78) combined. However, it is still a significantly lower figure than the April statistics for 2011 and 2012, at 147 and 195, respectively. The total number of asylum applications in 2016 is 613, against 353 for the same period last year.
Applications from Kosovo nationals continued to rise, from 24 in March to 29 in April 2016 and continued to represent the most common nationality from the European continent. Indeed, asylum applications from Europe represented the highest figure, at 48 in total compared with 33 from Asia and 45 from Africa. Syrian applications outweighed Iraqi ones in the Asian region last month at 10 compared to 6, respectively, whilst Moroccan nationals submitted the most applications from Africa, at 13. Overall, Iraqi and Syrian nationals have constituted the first and second highest applications totals for all months in 2016 so far, at 18.3% and 17%, respectively.
In April 2016, 47 of the total 126 applicants were granted refugee status, meaning that 188 asylum seekers have so far been given this status this year. 33 individuals were refused international protection last month, making 101 refusals so far in 2016. 33 applications were deemed incompetent in April 2016.
Last month, 28 people were transferred under the Dublin regulation to different Member States, the majority of which were sent to Germany (17), whilst three people were transferred to Luxembourg. 38 people returned to their home country in April 2016 and, like March, all were voluntary.
