The long-running debate regarding changing the Luxembourgish national flag has been once again brought to the fore with a new petition submitted to the Chamber of Deputies nearly a year after the previous one.

Adrien Lebrun, author of online petition n°635, has put forward similar arguments to a case made by Marc Dax in July 2015, stating that his submission was motivated by confusion between the current flag and that of France or the Netherlands. Mr. Lebrun proposed replacing the present 'rout, Waiß, blo' (red, white blue) flag with the 'Roude Léiw' (Red Lion), which features on the civil flag and ensign of the country.

Whilst MP Michel Wolter has claimed that the Roude Léiw is more popular and pleasing to the eye, the contrasting argument is that altering the flag could challenge Luxembourg's history, culture and traditional national identity.

The petition was opened to signatures on the Chamber of Deputies website on Monday 18 April 2016 and will close on 30 May 2016. It has so far received 47 online signatures and will need 4,500 to be discussed in parliament.
