Residents of the Hollerich district can expect to experience a gas odour from April to June 2016 as part of the decommissioning of the gasometer along rue de Bouillon, the Ville de Luxembourg reported on Monday.
The work planned on the gasometer, a large container in which natural or town gas is stored,, expected to take place from April to September 2016, will involve draining and cleaning water from the water tank, opening the gasometer and cleaning the inner walls and dismantling the gasometer, before restoring the site to its former condition.
The odours are brought about by the water and interior parts of the gasometer which have been in contact with the gas for many years. The odours are potentially perceptible within a 400 metre radius of the gasometer, but the smells are harmless and do not pose a threat to health.
The Ville de Luxembourg announced that all work will be carried out and supervised by specialised companies according to statutory regulations and safety measures, whilst residents in the affected area will be informed door-to-door of the course and duration of the work. The smells of the site should only be noticed outside of buildings and houses, so if a gas smell is experienced inside a building and there is doubt as to the source, contact one of the following institutions immediately:
