On 15 April 2016, the Grand Ducal Police presented the crime figures for Luxembourg for 2015.

A total of 40,353 crimes were registered in 2015 by the Police, which represents a decrease of 6.35% compared to 2014 (43,087 offenses). For the first time in recent years, changes in the overall crime has trended downward.

Donat Donven, deputy general manager of the Grand Ducal Police, nevertheless called for a cautious reading of the statistics that mostly identify general trends.

The crime rate per 100,000 inhabitants which had risen steadily in recent years, also experienced a decline of about 8.56% in 2015 compared to 2014.

The crime solving rate was 45% in 2015, representing a slight increase compared to 2014 (43.3%). A case is solved by the Police if at least one person has been identified or suspected of committing the crime.

A more detailed analysis shows that there are considerable variations in the following areas:

• narcotics cases: +485 (+11.6%)
• robberies with weapons: +25 (+41.7%)
• Prohibited Weapons: +38 (+15.4%)
• Scams, frauds +324 (+34.3%)
• financial crimes: +28 (+47.5%)
• burglaries -760 (-17.4%), especially in apartments: -619 (-18.7%)
• bicycle theft -54 (-30.0%)
• extortion -70 (-27.7%)
• brawls/fracas: -28 (-26.2%)
• racial discrimination: -14 (-32.6%)

The majority of infringements recorded by the Police were offenses against property (23,561), mainly robberies.

The number of crimes against persons (20.7% or 8,355 offenses) decreased by 6.4% compared to 2014. This category includes, among others, violence against people, sexual offenses (rape, modesty attacks, offenses against public decency ...) and brawls, threats and defamation ...

3 killings and 2 murders happened in 2015. For each of the 5 cases, a suspect has been identified by police. The category "intentional injury" has been constantly increasing until 2014. In 2015, the trend is down 7.8%.

In 2015, the Grand Ducal Police invested considerable efforts in the fight against burglaries and the fight against drugs, both priority areas for the police. In terms of burglaries, a peak was reached in 2014 with 4,368 accomplished crimes or attempted burglaries in homes both inhabited and uninhabited (cafes, restaurants ...). With considerable effort of the Police (analysis, reinforced controls to hotspots, coordination of investigations, trends discovered  ...), this figure has been reduced to 3,608 in 2015. In terms of burglaries in progress, the decline is 17.8% compared to 2014.

A proactive police work has also had a positive impact on the figures for drug cases that show the use, possession and trafficking of drugs. In 2015, the Grand Ducal Police has recorded 4,675 offenses in this area. Compared to 2014 this is an increase of 11.6% (485 offenses).
