In order to facilitate access to original historical sources, the National Archives of Luxembourg (ANLux), in collaboration with the Council of State, has published on www.anlux.lu more than 220,000 pages of records from the Council of State of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
These records dating from 1856 to 1940 show the Council's opinions and decisions on all subjects that were discussed from both the national and international perspective and illustrate its internal function.
The topics addressed concern projects and proposed laws and regulations of projects, e.g. on constitutional revisions, international conventions, communal affairs, public health, education, traffic on public roads and games of chance. These archives are authentic evidence of the work done within an institution committed over a period of 160 years in the development of Luxembourg standards and reflect the positions of councilors on the topics.
20,000 additional archive pages have been digitised and made available for consultation in the reading room of the National Archives. These include decisions of the Committee of Administrative Litigation and the minutes of the public and plenary meetings of the State Council. Exclusive consultation of these 20,000 pages at ANLux is explained by the presence of numerous personal data contained in these documents. The publishing of these archives is within the digitisation policy of the National Archives and the State Council to facilitate public access to their heritage and to avoid a deterioration of the original documents due to regular physical consultations.
In this context, ANLux already has many other online documents, including 6,500 pictures of Luxembourg from 1950 to 1970, technical drawings and historical plans of Arbed, charters of the Abbey of St. Willibrord in Echternach or the "Grand Bertels" work made from 1597 showing ink drawings of many Luxembourg localities. All these archival documents are downloadable via the www.anlux.lu site.
