The Chamber of Deputies will be debating a potential ban on the sale of fur in Luxembourg after a petition put forward by a concerned citizen received 4,868 signatures of support a week before closing.
Petition n°605, submitted online by Yves Stocklausen, is due to close on 22 March 2016, but it has already surpassed the 4,500 signatures required for it to be discussed in Parliament. It received nearly 1,600 signatures 24 hours after being opened online on 9 February 2016. A public Facebook page, through which Yves Stocklausen has regularly updated the increasing number of signatures submitted, has also been joined by over 3,000 members.
The petition proposed that Luxembourg set an example to other markets by prohibiting the sale of fur, to combat the suffering that is often experienced by the animals before they are killed for their coats. The EU holds about 6,000 fur farms, although certain Member States such as Austria, Croatia and the UK have implemented bans.
