An incident that began with a motorist employing excessive speed resulted in a police pursuit and an attempted attack on a police officer on Monday evening in Weiswampach.
The driver was spotted travelling at 84 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, leading two police officers to motion to the motorist to pull over. The driver defied the signal and continued heading straight towards them, forcing the two police officers to jump off the road to avoid being hit.
The police immediately gave chase and back-up was requested, following the driver as he swerved several times into the opposite lane. Once the vehicle was finally brought to a halt, the driver locked his car door and refused to open it. When the man finally did concede to exit the vehicle, he attempted to attack an officer with a fire extinguisher and was subsequently tackled to the ground, upon which his vehicle rolled backwards and crashed into a maintenance vehicle.
A subsequent police search of the car recovered over 1,000 bottles of alcohol to which the police attributed the man's attempts to flee. He was charged with resisting arrest with a weapon.
