The recently-installed speed cameras will come into affect across Luxembourg from 09:00 next Wednesday 16 March 2016, according to Luxembourg's Ministry of Sustainable Development and Infrastructure on Friday afternoon.
The first ten fixed speed cameras will come into operation, with six mobile cameras in addition. A Ministry spokesperson, when contacted by The Luxembourg Chronicle, confirmed that the difference between the new mobile cameras and those used at present is that the new mobile cameras do not have to be hand-held by police officers and can be mounted on police cars.
The initial ten fixed speed cameras are located at the following:
- Dorscheiderhäuschen, Hoscheid - Marnach
- Lipperscheid-Dellt
- Brouch - Reckange
- Oberpallen - Beckerich
- Schlammestee, Hespérange - Frisange
- Échangeur Ettelbruck/Ingeldorf - A7
- Heiderscheidergrund - Heiderscheid
- Merl
- Roost
- Waldhof - Gonderange

In addition, the next ten fixed speed cameras will follow in April and will be operational immediately when installed.
In the first phase, only excessive speed will be monitored and sanctioned, as the new system is automated and doe not require manual intervention - the cameras can make out the registration plates (taking pictures of both the front and rear, as well as of the driver) and automatically issue fines which are sent out in the post. The Ministry is also undertaking a study to establish how these new cameras can be also used to detect other infractions, including jumping red lights, safety distances between vehicles, driving in bus lanes, etc., with an end date in 2017.
All vehicles, regardless of country of registration, as well as whether private, company or rental cars, are covered by the new system. The fixed cameras will monitor traffic travelling both directions, with up to 3 lanes covered at once (in each direction).
While the locations of the fixed speed cameras are advertised, those of mobile cameras will not be.
