MeteoLux has published a report confirming that December 2015 was the warmest since records began in 1947.
At the Findel weather station at Luxembourg Airport, records for December 2015 showed a monthly average temperature of 6.8°C, i.e. 5°C above the average for the reference period 1981-2010 (1.8°C average). December 1988 (4.3°C) was therefore releaged to second place.
According to the "Climate Indicator Bulletin" produced as part of ECA&D (European Climate Assessment & Dataset) project in which MeteoLux actively participates by providing its climatological data, 2015 is the second warmest year on record in Europe after the year 2014 which holds the record (2007 in 3rd position).
These extreme temperatures were also observed in Luxembourg with an average temperature on 22 December 2015 of 10.4°C. 2015 years currently occupies 3rd position of the list of hottest years ever recorded at the Luxembourg-Findel weather station since 1947, almost as high as in 2011, when an average temperature of 10.6°C was observed, with 10.8°C in 2014.
This extremely gentle temperature observed throughout central Europe was caused by stable weather during almost all of December. Luxembourg was between a deep depression centered on the North Atlantic, and extensive anticyclones located on the Alps and the south / south-east Europe. This configuration was conducive to the west and southwest air flow bringing repeatedly subtropical air masses of marine origin in the direction of Luxembourg.
