Autumn 2015 Sees 3rd Mildest November Since Records Began

Autumn 2015 in Luxembourg was mild, slightly too dry and not particularly sunny, a report released by the Meteolux weather station in Findel on Friday 4 December 2015 has revealed.

Climate data from the period dating between September and November 2015 has shown a cool and humid September, but with a sunshine duration equal to the long-term average 1981-2010. The transition from August to September brought with it a radical change in the weather, with a nearly stationary front from a depression over northern Germany stretching from the Atlantic to the Netherlands via France. Luxembourg was situation next to warm air masses causing torrential downpours and strong thunderstorms. Fresh air from the Atlantic instigated a remarkable temperature drop of around 10°C in Luxembourg, with a mid-month depression over the British isles causing variable and windy weather.

Mid-September continuous rainfall gave way to stormy showers before Luxembourg began experiencing mild autumnal weather in the middle of October, which continued into November. Humid air masses caused the development of fog in the country, continuing until mid-November, until the mix of a deep depression over the Atlantic and on the British Isles and a powerful anticyclone over the Alps and southeastern Europe brought storms with heavy rains to Luxembourg. These unsettled weather conditions lasted until the end of the month, with the 24 and 25 November marking low and temporary snowfall.

The average autumnal temperature this year was slightly above the long-term average; at 9.6°C the average temperature was higher by 0.2°C relative to the reference period from 1981 to 2010. The maximum temperature of 21.7°C was reached on 12 September, whilst the lowest temperature drop was -2.7°C on 24 and 27 November 2015. The monthly average temperatures were 12.7°C for September, 8.8°C for October and 7.4°C for November, the latter of which marked the third mildest November recorded at the Findel weather station since records began in 1947.

The accumulated rainfall of autumn 2015 amounted to 216 l/m2, 10% lower compared to the long-term average noted between 1981 and 2010. September 2015 represented the 8th rainiest month since records began, and the majority of rainfall fell in just four days.
