The number of people requesting asylum in Luxembourg during November continued the rise since the summer, with 423 applying last month alone, bringing the total number to date this year to 2018; this compares to 1,008 for the corresponding period last year (1,091 over the 12 months in 2014), and 1,010 for the first 11 months of 2013.
Iraq saw the most applicants for asylum received, with 160 in total, and Syria with 129; Afghanistan had 68, with 15 from Albania, 13 from Iran and 12 from Kosovo. So far this year, 524 people from Syria have applied for asylum in Luxembourg, with 421 from Iraq and 235 from Kosovo, 144 from albania and 126 from Afghanistan. In May, 46 Syrian refugees were granted status in the Grand Duchy in addition to these figures.
Of the 131 decisions taken in November regarding applications for refugee status, 27 were granted, 48 were refused, 18 were declared incompetent, 5 were determined to be irrecovable. Another 15 were repatriated to other EU countries (4 to Germany, 3 to Italy and the rest to 8 other countries), with another 5 coming to Luxembourg (from Germany). Another 48 were returned to their original countries, 3 forcibly and 45 voluntary.
