A scam in which individuals attempt to collect money on the streets under the pretense of raising money for Handicap International Luxembourg has once again reared its head, the non-profit organisation reported Tuesday.
Handicap International has received numerous reports of children and teenagers pretending to be affiliated with the NGO in order to receive money from members of the public frequenting Luxembourg City's Christmas markets and other parts of the country.
The association has therefore reminded the public that it does not collect funds on the street or door-to-door, and that financial aid is requested only as debit and therefore guarantees that the donations will be for the sole benefit of Handicap International projects. Volunteers working with Handicap International are also easily identifiable by their brightly-coloured clothes and the logo of the organisation itself. Each volunteer carries badge identification which can be verified upon request and which confirms their membership in the association.
Handicap International stated that it strongly regretted that these acts were resulting in misappropriated generosity and threatening public confidence.
