On 16 September 2015, two men were arrested on suspicion of drug possession following a motorway police chase.
At around 22:20 on Wednesday afternoon, several officials from Customs and the Department of 'Inspection anti-drogues et produits sensibles' were at the motorway services at the Aire de Capellen on the A6 to lead a vehicle check.
Upon being notified of the pending check, the driver of one vehicle accelerated and fled the scene with another occupant, with police giving chase shortly behind. The vehicle was reportedly travelling at excessive speed whilst overtaking several motorists on the hard shoulder, which was undergoing construction work at the time.
At the exit of the A3 motorway, the vehicle was eventually stopped and its occupants were put in handcuffs to avoid any further excape attempts, before being led away for separate interviews. It transpired that the driver was not in fact the owner of the car and no longer owned a valid driving license.
Upon discovering that the men were heading to France on their way back from the Netherlands, the police became suspicious that the men could have been transporting drugs and disposed of them. A drug search of the A6 motorway was subsequently carried out with sniffer dogs, during which a packet containing a kilo of cocaine was located.
The two men were arrested and their vehicle and narcotics were confiscated. The following afternoon, the two men appeared before the examining magistrate.
