Representatives from the Association de Soutien aux Travailleurs Immigrés (ASTI) were received by Luxembourg's Minister of Labour, Employment and Social and Solidarity Economy Nicolas Schmit on 15 September 2015 to discuss the reception of international protection seekers and their integration into the labour market.
ASTI has previously been vocal in its criticism of the EU's handling of the refugee crisis, calling for a better European reception of displaced people who have fled war, torture, rape and persecution and requesting that the Luxembourgish government provide refugees with the financial means to socially and professionally integrate into Luxembourg life.
Minister Schmit appeared to be of the same opinion, stating at the meeting: "The current situation poses a considerable challenge, but if we mobilise the necessary means this crisis can also present an opportunity for our society and our economy".
The Minister went on to highlight the importance of training in facilitating the integration of refugees into the labour market, citing it as an investment in people.
