Seventeen dogs have been handed over to animal welfare after being found trapped inside an abandoned van in Luxembourg City yesterday afternoon.
The Grand Ducal Police were first alerted to the incident after receing a call from an unidentified witness who had spotted a van with foreign identity plates left on the grounds of a hotel along Route d'Echternach.
After arriving on the scene, the police conducted a search of the van, the doors of which had been left slightly open. They soon discovered that the van contained 11 separate crates holding a total of 17 dogs of a variety of breeds and ages.
With no trace of a potential owner or driver of the van, the Prosecutor ordered the confiscation of the vehicle and the handing over of the dogs to animal welfare authorities. Around 15 volunteers from various animal welfare organisations arrived on the scene to take care of the dogs and puppies, and a vet was on hand to ascertain the health condition of some of the dogs.
As the van was being towed, two people arrived and identified themselves as the owners, claiming they had just participated in a dog show in Luxembourg and that they were preparing for their return journey. The two people were written up.
The Police thanked those who had volunteered their time to take care of the dogs and had quickly ensured their health and safety.
