Early on the morning of Sunday 2 August 2015, a motorist was seen to come flying out, at an excessive speed, of the Saint Esprit tunnel in Luxembourg City.
The driver reportedly exited the tunnel at such a speed that all four wheels of the car were lifted off the ground, before the vehicle veered over to the opposite side of the road, crashing into lighting poles and the wall of a building. It was at this point that the engine compartment of the car began to catch fire, which was quickly put out by a passer-by using a fire extinguisher.
Despite reports that he was injured, the driver ran from the scene and a police patrol immediately began a search for the motorist. The driver was eventually located at the crossroads between Avenue de la Gare and Rue Jean Origer, which was smeared with blood and littered with broken glass.
The driver was taken to the hospital for his injuries, and an alcohol test was reported positive. The driver, whose car was completely totalled, will be subject to a ban by 2017.
