A public petition calling for the decriminalisation of the consumption and possession of cannabis in Luxembourg was opened to signatures yesterday, Thursday 30 July 2015.

The petition was originally submitted to the Chamber of Deputies on 5 July 2015 by a Mr. Patrick Pereira, who stated that cannabis was largely misunderstood to be a hard drug. Pereira went on to claim that cannabis held an equal right to legalisation as did coffee, tobacco and other 'normalised' products with addictive properties.

The petition, which has already received 44 electronic signatures since the forum was opened yesterday, signifies the involvement of Luxembourg's population in the pressure for cannabis law reform that has been spreading internationally since Colorado became the first US state to legalise cannabis in January 2014.

The forum and signatures for the petition will end on 10 September 2015.
